The most exciting event on London’s documentary calendar this week is a special preview screening of Leviathan, taking place on Thursday the 24th of October at the ICA.
The film, an experimental documentary from Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, both of Harvard university, chronicles the journey of a North American fishing vessel on a whaling expedition.
Both filmmakers work out of the Sensory Ethnographic lab at Harvard, and the film is designed to be an aesthetic and visceral experience that avoids both context and exposition.
According to the many glowing reviews it has received this year, the efforts are a rousing success, and the presentation of the Michael Powell award for Best British Feature from the Edinburgh Film Festival has only furthered the hype.
This event at the ICA is a chance to stay ahead of the curve and to see the film before it receives any kind of concrete release.
